Our Mission
To empower physicians to grow and build their mental fitness so they can be intentionally conscious to every moment of their lives, attain greater fulfillment, improve the clinician experience, and transform the culture of medicine.
Vision
To transform, inspire, and elevate the healthcare sector to be a beacon for well-being to all of society.
Our Philosophy
The human brain generates about 500 thoughts per hour. We are not aware of the far majority of them. Yet, these thoughts can have an impact on our mood, on how we engage in the moment, on how we respond, and ultimately on how we experience our life. According to Killigsworth and Gilbert, two Harvard psychologists who published a study in 2010, “A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind.” Killingsworth further said, “Mind-wandering is an excellent predictor of people’s happiness…In fact, how often our minds leave the present and where they tend to go is a better predictor of our happiness than the activities in which we are engaged.” Based on neuroscientific studies, this is the default mode for our brain, and it is in play when our default mode network is active. In contrast, the task-positive network is the conglomeration of the neural pathways that allow us access to the areas of the brain where discovery, creativity, compassion, a sense of purpose, attention, focused decision-making, a clear plan for action, and more can take place. The salient network gives us the ability to recognize when our brain is wandering in the default mode and helps us to shift to the task-positive network.
Mental Fitness is a person’s ability to be in command of their brain and how they respond, versus being under the control of the default thoughts and emotions generated by their brain. Mental Fitness is not determined by a person’s intelligence, drive, desire to perform well, or commitment to excellence. It is ultimately determined by consistent training of the mind that permits quieting of the thoughts generated by the default mode network and creation of more neural pathways that facilitate shifting to the positive-task network. The higher a person’s mental fitness, the better their ability to remain actively conscious to what is in the present moment and the more they can exercise intentional control and choice over how they respond in any particular situation.
When under stress our brain tends to go into default mode, and when that stress becomes chronic it is very difficult for our brain to shift to the task-positive network. This means that in this state most have minimal to no control over how they react in any situation, especially those that are challenging. Mental fitness can counteract these effects so we can be more intentionally conscious of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Understanding that the health sector is currently amid a crisis of chronic stress and burnout, it is essential that physicians learn how to build their mental fitness to practice “Intentionally Conscious Doctoring”. Over the course of time, the business of medicine has become progressively more complex. The demands and expectations placed on physicians have become increasingly challenging to achieve, and are continuously changing. Yet, most physicians receive very little to no training on how to navigate the challenges and handle the constant change. Mental Fitness training provides physicians with the mental flexibility and agility to be able to do this with more ease. Mental fitness is to the brain what physical fitness is to the body. It allows our brain to deal with a heavier weight (bigger challenge) with less effort.
MARPE's proprietary “Intentionally Conscious Doctoring” for physicians and “Intentionally Conscious Healthcare” for healthcare teams have been crafted on the understanding that the growing and building of mental fitness is paramount to creating long-lasting positive transformation in the lives of physicians and healthcare organizations. To this end our programs provide participants with a strong foundation to progressively build their mental fitness as they explore and work on addressing the specific challenges and obstacles to their most impactful, effective, and fulfilling experiences in their professional and personal lives.
